Republican Margaret Chase Smith of Maine was elected to the Senate, becoming the first woman to serve in both houses of Congress.

Baseball legend Babe Ruth died in New York at age 53.

The first TV daytime soap opera, "These Are My Children" was broadcast from the NBC studios in Chicago, Illinois.

An American B-50 Super-fortress, the Lucky Lady II, landed at Fort Worth, Texas, after completing the first non-stop round-the-world flight.

President Truman helped dedicate New York International Airport (later John F. Kennedy International Airport) at Idlewild Field.

World Events

The U.N. General Assembly adopted its Universal Declaration on Human Rights.

The Republic of Korea was proclaimed.
