National Events

Senator Robert A. Taft of Ohio, known as "Mr. Republican," died in New York at age 63.

Hank Aaron of the Milwaukee Braves hit the first of his record 755 major-league home runs, in a game against the St. Louis Cardinals. (The Braves won, 7-5.) 

The Supreme Court ruled
in its Brown vs. Board of Education of Topeka decision that racially segregated public schools were inherently unequal.

The Korean War armistice was signed at Panmunjom, ending three years of fighting.

Julius and Ethel Rosenberg, convicted of conspiring to pass U.S. atomic secrets to the Soviet Union, were executed at Sing Sing Prison in Ossining, N.Y.

About 100 people died when a tornado struck Worcester, Mass.

World Events

The Soviet Union publicly acknowledged it had tested a hydrogen bomb.

Queen Eliiabeth II of Britain was crowned in Westminster Abbey, 16 months after the death of her father, King George VI.
