National Events

Elvis Presley made his radio debut as Memphis, Tenn., station WHBQ played his first recording for Sun Records, "That's All Right (Mama)." 

The Atomic Energy Commission voted against re-instating Dr. J. Robert Oppenheimer's access to classified information.

The Iwo Jima Memorial was dedicated in Arlington, Va. 

The Communist Control Act went into effect, virtually outlawing the Communist Party in the United States. 

The first atomic-powered vessel, the submarine Nautilus, was commissioned by the Navy 

Sports Illustrated
was first published by Time Inc. 

President Eisenhower signed an order adding the words "under God" to the Pledge of Allegiance.

World Events

The western Africa nation of Algeria began its rebellion against French rule.

French Premier Joseph Laniel and Vietnamese Premier Buu Loc initialed treaties in Paris according "complete independence" to Vietnam.

West Germany joined the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.

Formal peace took hold in Indochina ending more than seven years of fighting between the French and Communist Vietminh.
