During a raid in Dale County, 1,100 gallons of moonshine were destroyed.

Frank Reeves was named the head football coach at CHS.

National Events

The United States conducted its first underground nuclear test, in the Nevada desert.

Arkansas Gov. Orval Faubus called out the National Guard to prevent nine black students from entering Central High School in Little Rock.

Ford Motor Co. began selling its ill-fated "Edsel." 

South Carolina Sen. Strom Thurmond (then a Democrat) ended a filibuster against a civil rights bill after talking for more than 24 hours

A space ship carrying a satellite, exploded on the launch pad on the United States first attempt at launching something into orbit.

The U.S. entered the "space age" with its first successful launch of a satellite into orbit, Explorer 1.

Rock-and-roll singer Elvis Presley was inducted into the Army
in Memphis, Tenn.

World Events

The Soviet Union launched Sputnik 2, the Second manmade satellite, into orbit; on board was a dog named Laika who was sacrificed in the experiment.

French author Albert Camus was awarded the Nobel Prize in literature.

The Space Age began as the Soviet Union launched Sputnik, the first man-made satellite, into orbit.

Harold MacMillan became prime minister of Great Britain, following the resignation of Anthony Eden.

Nikita Khrushchev became Soviet premier in addition to First Secretary of the Communist Party.
