Here's what was happening in the community, the school, and the world when this class was setting off on their future endeavors.

Local Events

Members of the 58-59 basketball team were Joe Walker, Wendal Payne, Charles McAfee, Mickey Andrews, David Jackson, Harvey Johnson, Billy Thrasher, Neldon Tomlin, and Billy Walker.  The team was coached by Raygene Burkett and was assisted by Fred Hughston. The captain of the squad was Walter Johnson and serving as co-captain was David Jackson.

Ozark Rotary Club chartered with 21 members with James Y. Carroll, owner of Carroll Hardware, acting as President ; Henry E. Whigham, executive director of the Ozark Housing Authority,  acting as secretary.  The club was sponsored by the Dothan Rotary Club. Weekly meetings were scheduled to be held at the Horizon Restaurant. Charter members are: Henry Steagall, Dr. Major Mills, James Sollie, Durwood Deloney, Murray Wells, Joe McCluney, W.M. Lewis, Henry Higham, Vernon Welch, Sam Y. Carroll, Rufus Barnett, Douglas Brown, Wilmer Parker, James Carroll, B.F. Williams, Mike Sollie, Baker Gamble, Tom Novak and O.W. Rudd.

The homecoming queen was Carol Lisenby during the annual homecoming celebration against Geneva. The queens court included Susanne Patterson, senior ; Pat Miller, junior ; Dianne Cook, sophomore ; and Barbara Rogers, freshman. Prior to the game Miss Lisenby presented the game ball to co-captains Mickey Andrews, Robert Culverhouse, and Jimmy Rudd. They in turn presented her with a bouquet of red roses.

The Smart Stepping Carroll High School band under the direction of John H. Pete Mosley performed at the halftime ceremony and a pre-game parade through Ozark.  The majorettes were: Chris McPhaul, Marilyn Morgan, June Garrett , Carol Lisenby, Pam Wells and Dianne Cook.

The Commercial Bank of Ozark opens in April 1959 with $300,000 capital and 199 stockholders. The board of directors were E.E. Dorroh, president and cashier ; E.E. Flowers, director ; Henry E. Steagall II, secretary and director ; W.C. Brown, vice-president ; Douglas Brown, chairman, Harry P. Hall, director ; and E. Martin Price, director.  The building was a $100,000 investment for the lot and equipment.

100 students graduated in the class of 1959. The theme of the graduation ceremony was "Ideas and Ideals" and it was presented by the honor students in the class.  Valedictorians were Loretta Enfinger and Toni Crumpler, and Salutatorians were Martha Harris and Peggy Hagler. The 1959 graduating class was the second largest in south Alabama at the time.

The Commercial Bank of Ozark was first chartered.

Dial telephone service began in Ozark for the first time.

The new 92 acre Dale County Lake opened.

Walter Johnson graduated with perfect attendance throughout 12 years of school.

Opening enrollment in the Ozark City School System was 2725 students.

 

National Events

President Eisenhower signed the Alaska statehood bill. 

The anti-Communist John Birch Society was formed in Indianapolis. 

Sherman Adams, assistant to President Eisenhower, resigned amid charges of improperly using his influence to help an industrialist. 

The lunar probe Pioneer I
was launched; it failed to go as far out as planned, fell back to Earth, and burned up in the atmosphere.

Pan American Airways flew its first Boeing 707 jetliner from New York to Paris in'8:41.

The first transatlantic passenger jetliner service was begun by British Overseas Airways Corp. with flights between London and New York.

Actors Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward were married.

President Eisenhower signed the Hawaii statehood bill.

The nuclear-powered submarine Nautilus became the first vessel to cross the North Pole underwater. 

President Eisenhower signed the National Aeronautics and Space Act, which created NASA.

World Events

Charles de Gaulle became premier of France.

The army of Iraq overthrew the monarchy 

Pope Pius XII died, 19 years after he was elevated to the papacy. (He was succeeded by Pope John XXIII.)

The African nation of Chad became an autonomous republic within the French community.

Gamel Abdel Nasser of Egypt was formerly nominated to become the first president of the new United Arab Republic, a short lived union of Egypt and Syria.

Fidel Castro became premier of Cuba after the overthrow of Fulgencio Batista.

Hi Yall...I attended flight school at Rucker back in the dark ages and there was a pretty gal named Janice Worth who worked at the NCO club on Rucker who was from Ozark. I believe she was in the class of '59. I attended the Warrant Officer Senior course in '83 and was happily reunited with Janice for a few months. I lost contact with her in the late 80's and would be interested in finding her.

A Big "HELLO" to the wonderful CLASS OF 1959! I just read the Memorial for David Woodham and suddenly felt the need to reach out to old friends. Would love to hear from anyone.
