Here's what was happening in the community, the school, and the world when this class was setting off on their future endeavors. Local Events Mike Sollie III was named Circuit Judge of the new 33rd Judicial Circuit composed of Dale and Geneva Counties. Governor John Patterson signed the measure when it passed the Senate 16-13. W.B. Matthews was named the deputy solicitor for Dale County. Prior to this new judicial circuit, Dale County was in the 3rd circuit comprising Barber and Bullock Counties. The 1960 census showed that in Dale County there were 9,030 houses. Of these:
Opening enrollment in the Ozark City School System was 2761 students. Neita Belcher was crowned Miss Ozark. National Events A superpower summit in Paris collapsed
on its opening day as the Soviet Union leveled espionage charges against the United States
in the case of the U-2 spy plane incident. America's 49-star flag, honoring Alaskan statehood, was officially unfurled. A treaty was signed by the U.S. and 11 other countries which set aside Antarctica as a scientific preserve, free from military activity. Cuba was recognized by the U.S. along with Fidel Castro's new government. American Airlines became the first airline to have a scheduled transcontinental flight in a Boeing 707. Buddy Holly, Ritchie Havens, and J.P. "The Big Bopper" Richardson, were killed in a plane crash near Clear Lake, Iowa. The first test firing of an intercontinental ballistic missile was a success after being fired from Cape Canaveral. The first weather satellite, TIROS-1,
was launched from Cape World Events The Soviet space probe Luna II became the first manmade object to reach the moon as it crashed onto the lunar surface. The 8th Winter Olympics were held in Squaw Valley, California. They were formally opened by Vice-President Richard Nixon. France exploded its first atomic bomb. The U.S. Olympic hockey team defeated the Soviets 3- 2, at the Winter Games in Squaw Valley Calif. (The U.S. team went on to win the gold medal.)
