* = Point of Contact for Runion Information. Here's what was happening in the community, the school, and the world when this class was setting off on their future endeavors. Local Events The end of "thrill hill" occurred when the City of Ozark erected speed breakers on Fairview Ave. The street was known for young people driving their cars extremely fast down Fairview and flying in the air. Tell tale signs of this occurrence were visible on the street, where the rear bumpers of cars had gouged out the road. Cablevision made it's debut in Ozark. When the cablevision office opened in February, 1965, the subscription to the service costs $5.00 per month. The only stations that were available at the time were stations from the surrounding area, such as Panama City, FL. and Montgomery, AL. Radar was introduced into the Ozark Police Department to catch speeders. The first offense for speeding resulted in a fine of $15.00. The second offense was $32.00 and the third offense resulted in the loss of the violator's drivers license. Dr. G.R. Crosby opened his optometry practice in Ozark after moving from Enterprise. Mickey Andrews began his coaching career at E.B. Erwin high school in Center Point, AL. Mickey had just received his degree in physical education from the University of Alabama. Ozark celebrated "Mickey Andrews Day" and Bear Bryant came to Ozark to help in the celebration. The CHS basketball team set a school regular season record when they finished the regular season with 20 wins and 5 losses. This was the most wins ever at CHS. Holman Funeral Home opened their new building on South Union Avenue at a cost of $110,000. The building had 8,500 square feet. Holman Funeral Home had been in business for 36 continuous years at the time of the buildings grand opening. The largest graduating class ever at CHS, received their diplomas on May 21 at Matthews Stadium. There were 242 students who received their diplomas. East Gate School was transferred from the Dale County Schools system to the City of Ozark school system, after a court battle. The county school board had filed a lawsuit attempting to block the transfer, but the city prevailed. Tommy Lamar Armstrong, a 65 CHS graduate, died from injuries he received in an automobile accident in Newton in July 1965. Dr. John Tamplin, an Ozark veterinarian, was credited with possibly saving the life of Lloyd Jackson, who was also in the accident and was bleeding severely. Jim Ketcham, one of the first at the accident scene and being on a motorcycle, was able to turn around on the bridge and go back up the hill to Newton and tell someone to call the police and an ambulance. State Events More than 3,000 civil rights demonstrators led by the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. began their march from Selma to Montgomery Alabama. A march by civil rights demonstrators was broken up in Selma, Ala., by state troopers and a sheriff's posse. The Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. led 25
000 marchers to the National Events Barry M. Goldwater said "extremism
in the defense of liberty is no vice" and that "moderation in the pursuit of
justice is no virtue", while accepting the Republican presidential nomination in San
Francisco, The space probe Mariner IV was launched on a course to Mars. The musical "Hello Dolly" opened on Broadway, beginning a run of 2,844 performances. The 24th amendment to the Constitution was ratified, which eliminated the poll tax on federal elections. The Beatles, arrived at New York's John F. Kennedy International airport to begin their first American tour. The Beatles, made their first appearance on live American television on The Ed Sullivan Show." Addressing a joint session of Congress,
President Johnson called for new legislation to guarantee every American's right to vote. The Free Speech Movement was launched
at the University of California at Berkeley. World Events Harold Wilson of the Labor Party assumed
office as Prime Minister of Great Britain, succeeding Conservative Sir Alec
Douglas-Home. Anti-U.S. rioting broke out in the Panama Canal Zone, leaving 3 U.S. soldiers and 21 Panamanians dead. Canada's new Maple Leaf flag was unfurled for the first time in Ottawa. Guest Book Entries
Linda Hunt Name: Brenda "Hale" Ring CommentsBelieve it or not, I am now living in beautiful downtown "Screamer" Alabama, better known as Thomas Mill Creek in Abbeville. Keith and I now have a lovely home on the lake and would be most excited about having as many of my classmates join us for a "get together" soon. We have just put in a pool and are having the fencing added, as of this writing. When the weather warms up some, my plan is to contact as many as possible and have a "mini reunion" on the Lake. Please let me know if any of you are interested. WAR EAGLE!!!!

I lived there for 3 1/2 years and have now moved to Florida. I met many of our old classmates and enjoyed talking over old times. I have an e-mail address and would love to hear from more of my former classmates. CommentsJust found this website. Looking forward to seeing all of you at our 40th! Doesn't seem possible. Leslie

CommentsAmazing what one finds when surfing the web!! My wife, Judy, and I will be returning to the U.S. shortly after 5 years in Central America, where I've been serving with the U.S. State Department. I'll be in Washington for awhile and probably retiring in 2005 - but not quite sure yet! Who knows, maybe I can make the next reunion. Hope so! Best wishes to everyone
