Here's what was happening in the community, the school, and the world when this class was setting off on their future endeavors. Watch for updates to this section! Local Events Rheba (Denise) "Holmes" Guest Was a senior class beauty. Anti-war protesters began four days of demonstrations in Washington, D.C., aimed at shutting down the nation's capital. Ralph "Shug" Jordan visited Ozark and spoke to the CHS Quarterback Club. Construction began on the Martindale Shopping Plaza. The decade of 1960-70 proved to be one of growth for Dale County, with the county being the fastest growing county in the state of Alabama. The Dale county population in 1960 was 37,268 and in 1970 it was 52,938, or an increase of 70.4% according to the U.S. Census Bureau. School bus overcrowding was a big issue in the county with the population booming. An average bus in the county had 105-115 children on buses that were designed for 66 riders. Eight members of the CHS band made All-State. They were Janet Snellgrove, Meredith Howard, Greg Simpson, Roy Wilt, Eila Selander, David Faulk, Paul Bartley and David Johnson. Ozark City School student population was increasing by an average of 152 students per year. Good Citizenship awards went to Rene Leatherwood and Jeannie Jarvis. Mr. and Mrs. CHS were Terry Dre and Marina Grantham. Sherry W. Brannon was hired to be the CHS football coach. This was the first year that the dual school system in the city of Ozark was abolished. Student enrollment in Dale County and Ozark City Schools was 4620 students at the beginning of the school year. Miss Ozark was Stephanie ODell and Little Miss Ozark was Lisa Dawn Ash. October 1970 was declared centennial month in Ozark in celebration of the citys 100th year in existence. The homecoming queen was Sandi Powell. The Dale County United Fund goal was $35,000. Four hundred workers were laid off by PAMI, a civilian contractor at Ft. Rucker. A group of 16 men from Ozark formed to oppose a one-cent sales tax levied by members of the Dale County Commission. The groups attorney Kenneth R. Cain filed lawsuits on their behalf. Ozark city government adopted a new official seal for the city. The class valedictorian was Dottie Hughes and salutatorian was Joan Cherry. Seven soldiers from Ft. Rucker were arrested in connection with a series of burglaries in the area including Harris TV. What became to be known as "Black Thursday" occurred on Apr. 30, 1971 when darkness fell upon Ozark at 2 oclock in the afternoon, and lasted about 30 minutes. Children at school were frightened as they were instructed to lie flat on the floor after a tornado was reported in the are by a local radio station. Only minor damage resulted from winds in the 35-40 mph range. Carroll Hardware opened an air-conditioning-heating division in Ozark. Two hundred forty five seniors took part in graduation exercises. The Optimist Club was chartered in Ozark. Dale County Lake reopened after being closed for one year and was renamed the Edward W. Lisenby Lake. Jack Dibrell was class president and Terry Brown was president of the student body. Sandi Powell was homecoming Queen. National Events The Environmental Protection Agency began operation under the direction of William Ruckelshaus. "Hello Dolly" the musical, closed on Broadway after 2,844 performances. The first commercial regular scheduled flight of the Boeing 747 began in New York and ended 6 1/2 hours later in London. President Nixon nominated Harrold Carswell to the Supreme Court. He was never approved due to a controversy over his past racial views. Astronauts Alan B. Sheppard Jr., Edgar D. Mitchell and Stuart A. Roosa went aboard Apollo 14 on a mission to the moon. Army Lt. William L. Calley Jr. was
convicted of murdering at least 22 Vietnamese civilians in the My Lai massacre. (Calley
ended up spending three years under house arrest.) Rock singer Janis Joplin, 27, was found
dead in her Hollywood hotel room. World Events

It will be held in August 2006 and we'll let you know the exact date as soon as we pick it out of a hat. Looks like a golf tourney on Friday, a poolside get together on Friday night, a softball game and catered picnic on Saturday, with a big bash finish on Saturday night with Dancing, Drinks, and food.
