Here's what was happening in the community, the school, and the world when this class was setting off on their future endeavors. Local Events Deloney's IGA opened at a new location on U.S. Hwy 231 in Ozark. The Deloney's started out in the grocery business in 1948 and moved into the most modern and complete facility in Ozark. Flu took a heavy toll on enrollment in the Ozark City School system in January 1979 when 650 students were absent on one day. Hardee's introduced a Biscuit Breakfast in Ozark. The CHS band were to perform at Six Flags Over Georgia in April. The population for Ozark was estimated to be 13, 868. The Golden Corral restaurant opened their doors to business in Ozark. Paul Terry took over as the CHS head football coach. Libba Garner got her Master of Divinity Degree from Duke University. Phillips Van Heusen leased the Ozark Civic Center at a cost of $2,500 per month. 257 students graduated on May 25. The class Valedictorian was Virginia Wagner and Salutatorian was Cynthia Carole Jernigan. Otasco opened their store in Ozark. Kristie Fuqua won the Little Miss Ozark contest. Georgia Harris won the title of Miss Ozark. Robert L. Baker, 49 of Ozark, drowned at a lake on Camp Alaflo in Coffee County while fishing with friends. Sarah M. Jableck graduated from the University of Alabama School of Medicine with a Doctor of Medicine Degree. State Events Jordan-Hare stadium expanded at Auburn University to a seating capacity of 72,000. The football team was placed on probation during the year. Coach Shug Jordan came to Ozark to speak at the Dale County Auburn Club. National Events The United States launched Pioneer Venus
2, which carried scientific probes to study the atmosphere of Venus. San Francisco Mayor George Moscone and City Supervisor Harvey Milk, were shot to death in City Hall, by Dan White, a former City Supervisor. Former Vice-President Hubert H. Humphrey died in Waverly, Minn. at the age of 66. The U.S. House of Representatives began
televising its day- The Camp David peace treaty was signed

264th pontiff of the Roman Catholic Church. Louise Joy Brown, the first test tube
baby was born in Oldham, England; she had been conceived through in-vitro fertilization. Conservative Party leader Margaret Thatcher was elected Britain's first female prime minister. Pope Paul VI died at Castel Gandolfo at age 80. Golda Meir, the former Israeli Prime Minister, died in Jerusalem. I have been working on Fort Rucker for the past 20 years. I work in the Operations Branch of the Directorate of Plans, Mobilization, and Security. I am married with two children, ages 17 and 6. My oldest will graduate in May 04! I recently built a home in Ozark and I am enjoying working in the yard and planting flowers. Hope everyone from the Class of 1979 is doing great! CommentsAs a 79 class alumni, surprised its been 5 years already since the 20 year reunion! I have been in Colorado for 12 years now, since graduating from Auburn in 84, serving 5 years in the U.S. Navy, and working in the engineering field since. I'm finishing a master's degree and also operate a ranch to keep busy.
