Local Events

Ozark City Schools saw a seven percent drop in total enrollment with 3,778 students enrolled as compared to 4,051 opening enrollment for the 81-82 school year.

The city school system had to deal with 10% reduction in funding from the state of Alabama.

Larry Pittman and Betty Brown were named Ozark's man and woman of the year by the 20th Century Club.

2,500 people turned out to hear gubernatorial candidate George Wallace at the Ozark Civic Center.

Tommy Fairweather, an eighth grade teacher at East Gate Junior High, was selected Alabama's Teacher of the Year for 82-83.

An investigation was underway into a $3.5 million marijuana farming operation in the Asbury Community, leading to the arrest of four suspects.

Lisa Skelton, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Douglas Skelton, was crowned Miss Ozark 1983-84.

Darci Little was selected as governor of Girls State in Montgomery as she participated in the week long program with 273 other girls from across Alabama.

National Events

Convicted murderer Charlie Brooks Jr. became the first U.S. prisoner to be executed by injection, at a prison in Huntsville, Texas.

Princess Grace of Monaco, formerly actress Grace Kelly, died at age 52 of injuries from a car crash the day before.

A Pan Am Boeing 727 crashed in Kenner, La. killing people aboard and eight people on the ground.

A jury in Washington, D.C., found john Hinckley Jr. innocent by reason of insanity in the shootings of President Reagan and three other men.

Seven people in the Chicago area died after unwittingly taking Extra-Strength Tylenol capsules laced with cyanide.

The newly finished Vietnam Veterans Memorial was opened to its first visitors in Washington D.C.

The space shuttle Challenger roared into orbit on its maiden voyage.

62 people, including 17 Americans, were killed at the U.S. Embassy in Beirut, Lebanon, by a suicide bomber.

In a case that drew much notoriety, a woman in New Bedford, Mass., reported being gang-raped atop a pool table in a tavern called Big Dan's; four men were later convicted of the attack.

A congressional commission released a report condemning the internment of Japanese-Americans during World War II as a "grave injustice."

Dr. Barney Clark, recipient of a permanent artificial heart, died at the University of Utah Medical Center after 112 days with the device.

World Events

Argentine forces surrendered to British troops on the disputed Falkland Islands.

Army Brig. General James L. Dozier was rescued from the Red Brigade by Italian anti-terrorism forces.

First of all, this site is great! Thanks for all the hard work it takes to keep it up-I wish everyone knew about it- I left oz in 1991 and moved to Niceville, Florida with my husband of 17yrs who passed away 3-11-2002, who also graduated from CHS in 1991. We have one beautiful daughter 14 her name is Brittani. The past few years we owned/operated Bayside Pest Control and I work at Wal-Mart. I am so interested in getting in touch with old friends - lots of names come to mind if anyone can help me find Lisa Lisenby, Stephanie Dawson, Debra Carnal, Susan Heath, just to name a few....... We all need to keep in touch life is short!! And you never know when it's gonna end-
