July 3, 2010 - There is a city-wide high school reunion planned for October 1, 2010 for all classes of Dale County High School of Ozark, D.A. Smith High School, Ozark High School and Carroll High School.  For details click on this link.

Local Events

Millie Murphree was crowned Miss Ozark and Missy Hicks was crowned Little Miss Ozark in May 1985.

CATO clothing store held their grand opening at Martindale Plaza.

Barefield’s Store for Men opened at Martindale Plaza.

Opening enrollment was 3721 in the Ozark City School System.

The Dale County Jail was heavily damaged by fire and had to closed down.

Nolan Company opened in Ozark.

The Holiday Inn opened on U.S. Hwy. 231.

The Dale County Commission approved a 2.5 mil Ad Valorem tax to finance a new county jail.

The Dairy Queen on Hwy. 231 and Deese Road was heavily damaged by fire.

Millie Murphree became the first Ozark girl to win the title of Miss National Peanut Festival. Shere Jo Hardy became Miss Ozark when Millie had to relinquish her title of Miss Ozark.

Bill Barefield and Berta Blackwell were named Ozark’s Man and Woman of the Year.

TG&Y department store opened.

280 students graduated from CHS.

National Events

The world's worst nuclear accident occurred at the Chernobyl plant in the Soviet Union. An explosion and fire killed at least 31 people and sent radioactivity into the atmosphere.

Christa McAuliffe
of New Hampshire was chosen to be the first schoolteacher to ride aboard a space shuttle. (McAuliffe and six other crew members died when the Challenger exploded shortly after lifting off.)

American educator Thomas Sutherland
was kidnapped in Lebanon. (He was released in November 7.991 along with fellow
hostage Terry Waite.)

The 17-day hijack ordeal of TWA Flight 847 began as two Lebanese Shiite Muslim extremists seized the jetliner shortly after takeoff from Athens, Greece.

Doctors discovered what turned out to be a cancerous growth in President Reagan's large intestine, prompting surgery the following day.

Bandleader Kay Kyser known for his "Kollege of Musical Knowledge," died in Chapel Hill, N.C., at age 79.

Bowing to pressure from irate customers, the Coca-Cola Co. said it would resume selling old-formula Coke, while continuing to sell New Coke.

The launch of the space shuttle Challenger was witnessed by school teacher Christa McAuliffe, who was fated to die when the spacecraft exploded after liftoff the following January.

Actor Rock Hudson died at his home in Beverly Hills Calif., at age 59 after a battle with AIDS.

U.S. fighter jets forced an Egyptian plane carrying the hijackers of the Italian cnzise ship Achille Lauro to land in Italy where the gunmen were taken into custody.

The United States launched an air raid against Libya in response to the bombing of a discotheque in Berlin on April 5; Libya said 37 people, mostly civilians, were killed.

In NASA's first post-Challenger launch, an unmanned Delta rocket lost power in its main engine shortly after liftoff, forcing safety officers to destroy it by remote control.

Richard Ramirez, later convicted of California's "Night Stalker" killings, was captured by residents of an East Los Angeles neighborhood.

137 people were killed when a Delta Air Lines jetliner crashed while attempting to land at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport.

An Arrow Air Charter crashed in Gander, Newfoundland, killing 248 American soldiers and 8 crew members.

Four American passengers were killed when a bomb exploded aboard a TWA jetliner enroute from Rome to Athens, Greece.

167 people died when a Mexican Airlines Boeing 727 crashed
in a remote mountainous region of Mexico.

World Events

All 329 people aboard an Air-India Boeing 747 died when the plane crashed into the Atlantic Ocean near Ireland, apparently because of a bomb.

The Mexico City area was struck by the first of two devastating earthquakes that claimed some 6,000 lives.

The world's worst single-aircraft disaster occurred as a crippled Japan Air Lines Boeing 747 on a domestic flight crashed into a mountain, killing 520 people. 

Pope John Paul II visited a Rome synagogue in the first recorded papal visit of its kind.

President Ferdinand E. Marcos fled the Philippines after 20 years of rule in the wake of a' tainted election; Corazon Aquino assumed the presidency.

Swedish Prime Minister Olof Paline was shot to death in central Stockholm.

Four French television crew members were abducted in west Beirut; a caller claimed Islamic Jihad was responsible. (All four were eventually released.)

Palestinian guerrillas opened fire inside the Rome and Vienna airports; a total of 20 people were killed including five of the attackers, who were slain by police and security personnel.

American naturalist Dian Fossey who had studied gorillas in the wild, was found hacked to death at a research station in Rwanda.

I would have graduated from Carroll High School in 1986, but I moved during my JR year. It was nice to find this sight to look back and remember my classmates.
