Here's what was happening in the community, the school, and the world when this class was setting off on their future endeavors. Watch for updates to this section! Local Events Rebekah Ann Rivenbark was crowned Miss Ozark and Bonnie Sheree Mizell was Little Miss Ozark in May 1985. President Ronald Reagan was at the Dothan Civic Center. Opening enrollment was 3,773 students in the Ozark City School System. Fire gutted Walter Hand Ford Motor Co. in Ozark destroying 19 vehicles. The new El Palacio restaurant and shopping center opened in Ozark. Fire destroyed Rudd Furniture Co. with damages estimated to be around $500,000. Paige Byrd was named Teacher of the Year at CHS. The Piggly Wiggly grocery store shut its doors, having been in operation since 1946 in Ozark. Reverend Douglas Matthews and Mrs. Jimmie Elliott were named Ozark’s Man and Woman of the Year. Dr. Mac Irving, a member of the Ozark Board of Education, was killed in an automobile accident near Hartford, AL. 350 students graduated from CHS. National Events 37 American sailors were killed when an
Iraqi warplane attacked the U.S. Navy frigate Stark in the Persian Gulf. (Iraq and the
United States said the attack was made in mistake.) The Iran-Contra affair came to light when President Reagan and Attorney General Edwin Meese revealed that profits from secret arms sales to Iran had been diverted to Nicaraguan rebels. The U.S. observed the first Martin Luther King holiday. The space shuttle Challenger exploded 73 seconds after liftoff from Cape Canaveral, killing all 7 crew members. Pop artist Andy Warhol died at a New York City hospital at age 58. World Events
Desmond Tutu was installed as the first black to lead the Anglican Church in southern Africa. Great Britain and France announced plans to build the Channel Tunnel. Haitian President-for-Life Jean-Claude Duvalier fled his country, ending 28 years of his family's rule. 189 people died when the British ferry Herald of Free Enterprise capsized off the Belgian port of Zeebrugge. I was just in town last week for Steven's (my little brother) wedding - probably should have looked some of yall up but hope I'll see many at a reunion. My husband graduated in a class of 30 or so & more came to his reunion last summer than came to our last one - we can do better than that! CommentsHi my name is Julie Smith, I use to live in Ozark until we moved to N.C. in '83, this was shortly after my 7th grade year. I had attended East Gate Middle and Mixon Elem. I was in the band at East Gate as well. My maiden name was Wright. If we had stayed in Ozark then I would have graduated with the class of '87. I am looking for anyone that I may have gone to school with or knew when I was growing up in Ozark, please e-mail if you remember me. My sister Leeanne Wright finished at Carroll High in '81 and my brother Marc Wright finished at Carroll High in '83. Anyone that knew them can contact me as well about them.
CommentsWould like to hear from old classmates.I still live in Alabama but not in Ozark. I have family that still lives there so I still visit from time to time. Three more years and we will be planning our 20 year reunion. Doesn't seem possible.
