Watch for updates to this section! Local Events D. Michael Ray Self, 41, was named Principal of East Gate Middle School, succeeding Sony Raley who retired. DeWayne Huff of Sylacauga, was named basketball coach at CHS, who was replacing Mike Pugh who resigned to take a coaching job at Enterprise State Junior College. Opening enrollment at Ozark City Schools showed 3,268 students enrolling at the city’s six schools, which is a reduction of 78 students from last years numbers. Ground breaking ceremonies took place for a new Dale County Agriculture Complex at the intersection of U.S. 231 and Hwy. 123. Ozark City Board of Education approved at $15.29 million budget for the 1995-96 school year. Hurricane Opal hit Ozark in October with 100-mph winds, causing widespread damage in the city. Farmers Furniture opened at their new location on U.S. 231. April Williams, Little Miss Ozark, was crowned Little Miss National Peanut Festival. Colonial Bank purchased three locations of Farmers and Merchants Bank in Dale County. Dewey President Williams, Ozark’s oldest and best known resident died at the age of 97. Dr. James Hershell Turner was hired as Ozark City School Superintendent of Education. Coach James Blanchard was named the teacher of the year at CHS. Dr. Ed Richardson, Alabama’s Superintendent of Education, mad a visit to first graders at Mixon Elementary Shool. 197 graduated from CHS. The Barn in Ozark, moved to their new location on U.S. 231. Donald "Butch" Caldwell was named CHS football head coach and athletic director. Bonnie Mizell was crowned Miss Ozark and Alycia Galloway was crowned Little Miss Ozark. Roy "Mickey" Snell was named Recreational Director for the City of Ozark. Frank Garrett was appointed to the Ozark City School Board of Education. Magnolia Manors, an assisted living facility, opened in Ozark. National Events An Atlanta bound ValuJet DC-9 caught fire shortly after takeoff from Miami and crashed into the Florida Everglades, killing all 110 people on board. The rock musical "Rent" by Jonathan Larson, opened off-Broadway. Comedian George Burns died in Beverly Hills, Calif., at age 100. Guest Book Entries

CommentsJust wanted to say "Hi" to everyone. I'm in NYC right now. Lots of stuff going on up here. I have a role in the remake of CATS this spring; and hopefully more rolls will follow.
